A Word from Our CEO

When we founded the Hunter Family Foundation, our commitment to helping others succeed was at the forefront of our minds. We were deeply concerned by the many troubling aspects of our society and how they negatively impact so many people, especially those living on the margins. Having been blessed in numerous ways, my wife, daughters, and I reflected on how our values and priorities have made a difference in our lives. Our Christian faith has been our foundation, and we are active in our church. We also recognized that education has been crucial in enabling us to be in a position to help others.

Personally, I am driven by a desire to help others solve the problems that plague our society. I am reminded of a quote from the Jewish-German physicist Albert Einstein, who said, "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." This is why I believe education is so important. It is also why I suspect that some people in power in our country are determined to control and undermine America's educational institutions. Colleges and universities are under attack, and financing a college education is becoming increasingly difficult. The renowned Black writer James Baldwin once wrote, "The purpose of education, finally, is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself, to make his own decisions..." 1

I strongly believe that we can help others succeed by encouraging them to think for themselves – to critically analyze the world and what they hear and see. Noted Black cultural critic and educator bell hooks wrote, "Critical thinking requires us to use our imagination, seeing things from perspectives other than our own and envisioning the likely consequences of our position." 2 We want to do everything we can to help people achieve a college education because college is where individuals are taught and encouraged to think critically. And people who think critically can help solve the problems we face.

And we invite you to help us help others by making a donation and promoting our work to others.

Our Work in Academic Year 2024-2025

How Your Support Fueled Our Mission

ree

Through our partnership with Calumet College of St. Joseph, we launched our God Always Provides (G.A.P.) Scholarship in the spring semester of 2025. This scholarship was able to pay the outstanding balances of three students–Graham, Mark & Robert–allowing them to register for their spring and summer courses.

In the spring of 2025, leading into graduation season, we started our first annual Degrees Matter Campaign. With the sale of our exclusive Degrees Matter t-shirts and direct donations, we raised nearly $1300. In partnership with Last Bison Standing, a Howard University student-and-alumni-run nonprofit, we identified a graduating senior, Kemar Brown, with an outstanding balance and paid it off ahead of graduation. Kemar completed taking his MCAT and is hopeful to start his medical school applications this fall.

Hunter Family Foundation Look Ahead

We're Committed to Continuing the Work

ree

As students begin filling college campuses across the country, we are excited to continue helping others do well through the boundless opportunities education can offer.

We’re currently working with Calumet College of St. Joseph to expand the eligibility requirements for our G.A.P. Scholarship and award two to three $1000 scholarships to current students for the 2025-2026 academic year.

We are also deepening partnerships with local organizations who are serving students in need of financial support to continue their educational journey.

And finally, we are pleased to share plans for a Hunter Family Foundation general scholarship, with the first award anticipated in 2026. This initiative will provide meaningful support to current college students and further advance our collective communities. More on this scholarship and how you can support will be shared soon.
